What was supposedly a six-month job has spectacularly failed as it continues to this day. But as the man who made the vow has proven, talk is cheap; and promises are mere words that his minions can later either walked back, or worse, claim to be a joke or a hyperbole.
The world has taken notice of this drug war. Trigger-happy tyrants applauded it; while reasonable leaders have expressed concern. And as expected of any deeply insecure people who cannot really justify their whimsical acts, the man in charge has cheered the applause and cursed the concerns. Any other sane man in the same position would have taken the grains of facts in those applause and concerns; and stopped and thought if the war he is wreaking on his country is really for the country and its people—or if it is for another reason entirely.
It could be a display of a no-nonsense leadership. A decisive man that does what needs doing to protect his country and his people. Or it could simply be a display of sheer arrogance of power.
The war’s result is nothing short of disappointment. Street drug runners—both real and imagined—are falling by the wayside. But on the other end of the spectrum, tons of illegal drugs continue to arrive in the country; and whatever the country’s security forces catch, they seemingly do their best not to discover who the actual importers are.
Worse, justice officials are having a field day dismissing charges against identified drug lords, and government officials who may have had a hand in helping them. Sadly, it was the man who made the now-broken vow who did the identifying through his so-called “drug matrix”. This development proves either the justice officials are on the take, or the vow-breaker proffered a list culled from his addled imagination. Other possible scenarios are just too horrible to even think about; like it was simply a bare grab for distribution territories.
But as this drugged war continue to hog our attention, the minions are slowly moving towards a tighter stranglehold of the country. They are impeaching those who do not subscribe to their points of view; while some are obviously setting up political foes even to the extent of freeing nefarious people who can—and will—fabricate charges against them.
And as most of us are amazingly still unaware, we may all soon find ourselves transported back to the 1970s.
